Where it Started with Crafting and Where it is Now

You know, I was trying to think back to see if
I could remember when I actually
started crafting
or creating.
I think it was with one of these!
I probably got a kit for making
potholders for a Christmas gift.
Although, these colors are great
what came in kits back in the day were
not this pretty.  Red, blue, green
and yellow if I remember correctly.

From there I went to this.
A kit with a loom like this for
making a thick chocker like that one
below.
You have to realize, this was
the 70's and a chocker like that
was the thing!
I wore mine all the time.

I was into the beads then.
I made other necklaces, chockers
or long ones with these seed
beads.

Then somewhere after that
I went down
a rabbie hole and got
totally lost in the world of
crafts!

I got into embroidery,
I was embroidery on just about anything
I could find. I did my jeans,

a big thunderbird
on the back of my brother's shirt, material
for hand towels and on and on.
Not really sure what age I was
when I was doing all this but I
would venture out to say around 14 or
so. My embroidery patterns came in
the form of iron transfers.
Aunt Martha's iron transfers.

While still doing this stuff, I
threw in kits for stitchery of pillows.
Things like this.
Rug hooking came along somewhere
around this time.

WOW...and the price on that sort of
kit is crazy.....course I know I did
not pay 23 bucks for a kit, but
that was also back in the 70's.

I thought macrame came next but
I was wrong, it would have been
knitting and crocheting.
I never got into dropping or
picking up stitches but I made
so many afghans.

 I then started
making potholder too. And loved knitting
house shoes.

Macrame came next (I think) starting
with planters.

Simple knots at first oh but, those
knots got more complex.
I made small hanging tables,

I made one somewhat like this,
only it had eight rows coming down.
But it had a large piece of
glass like that in it. A friend of mines
father worked for a glass place. I got
a piece of glass, 36 inches round
for 8 bucks, and it was thick.
That table hung in my moms
living room for over 20 yrs.
My brother was in college,
UT Martin and wanted a
hanging lamp. I could not find
one online like it but it was
something like this I guess,
Longer than this one.
Had beads in it, lot of
work. He took it off to college
with him.

Also did these,
I did something like this,
only it was two things and not
four, and where the shelves are, I
put in wooden spoons, hung
tea towels, that I embroidered on,
over the spoons.
Crap, can't remember all I
made but it was a lot.

Mind you, I would bounce
back and forth between several
of these types of crafts all
the time.

After I married, I remember
I had one of these
coat rack thingys, I
embroidered Aunt Martha tranfers
on to material and attached
them to the inside spot that was
open. I hung it in the bathroom
to hang clothes or towels on.

Married years, I did not get
into a lot of this stuff, busy
being a wife, house keeper,
a mom and working full time.
But as always, I slowly moved
back into some of this stuff again.

Then came drawing with
color pencils, decorating cakes,

The grands were gifted with t
the cake talent more than
anyone.
Then around that same time
I started drawing
with color
pencils, then paint class,
When I retired, I jumped into
playing with wood and saws.
But the latest would be my
watercolor painting of cards.

I think I filled my years up with
a lot of projects!!
And I loved every min of it.
I loved giving so many of
these projects to others for
gifts.

Keep in mind, the reason I ordered
a shed for my crafts,
I still have beads, lots of beads.
I have acrylic,
(those above are just acrylics)
 oil and watercolor paints.
I finally got rid of the paints for
fabrics. I gave 100's and 100's
of dollars worth of cross stitch
patterns, thread, clothe and so much
more away. I still have some yarn for
knitting and crocheting but I pretty
much buy what I need as I need it.
Again, I gave 100 of bucks worth
of yarn away.  I have items to repurpose,
I have ribbons, frames, and, wow,
hard to tell all I have....
Moving on, I have a scroll saw, jig saw,
reciprocating saw, miter saw,

table saw,
sanders, drills, Dremel tools, woodburning

stuff and there again, who knows what
all I will find. This stuff will be in the
other shed and finally, I will have
a place to work!

I don't do really major or
awesome woodwork, but
I gotta have my saws for the
simple things I do.

Anyway, hoping to add
a welding machine to my
list of stuff to play with soon.

Wow,
so much stuff to do, to finish,
to play with, I better get busy,
Pam

I had to laugh at this. Yup. I did that as an early craft. The beads? Yup. So much of it! We are incorrigible -- and of our times!

I've done a lot of different crafts over the years. Some I've gone back to and others I tried once and never again. I was thinking about buying one of those looms for my granddaughter for Christmas. I saw one in Walmart the last time I was there.

If they ever do another season of Making It, you should totally try out. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6874206/)

I remember latch hook. I did that before I learned to knit. My father did macrame. Oh, so much macrame. We had so many plant hangers in our house while I was growing up.
