Aprons, Flags, Elephant, Trucks, Minnie and Art

 If you are on FB
you prob have seen this before,
I see it once or twice a year.
But with that said, I love it.

The History of 'APRONS'

I don't think most kids today know what an apron is. The principle use of Mom's or Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..
And when the weather was cold, she wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, she walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about aprons.
REMEMBER:
Mom's and Grandma's used to set hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.
They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.
I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love.

Do you wear an apron when in the
kitchen. I need too wear one as messy
as I am but, I don't always do it.
I do however own a couple.

Monday, I finished up the second round
of meds and although I knew things
were still not right, I felt better enough
to want to get out of the house.

I grabbed the camera and started out to
Holenwald TN. About an hour
from the house.
I have been to Holenwald once,
I was about 17, dating my boyfriend,
Larry and we rode down to visit his moms
side of the family.
Holenwald, bigger than Nunnelly,
but still not big.
I always called it Hole in the wall.

Anyway, on the way there, you drive
through Centerville.
Been there several times, maybe
30 mins down the road.
Another not so big place!! lol
All these places are RURAL.
Those whom have never heard of
Centerville TN, it is where or beloved
Sarah Cannon was from.
WHO you say?
Sarah Cannon AKA Minnie Pearl.
If you don't know that name, look it up.

But anyway, my ride took place on Monday,
Memorial Day.
Centerville had the flags of the fallen up
at the park.
I stopped of course.

I knew that there would be nothing
open on Memorial Day but I just
had to get out and it was a pretty day.

Holenwald houses the one and only
Elephant Santuary in TN.
I saw this and had to photograph it.
A rubber tire
elephant.

Talk about recycling....great job.

In rural TN folks cars and trucks
stop working, they just push them
into a field, into the river...etc.

Really did not see a lot of interesting
things to photograph.

Oh my way back I stopped in Centerville
to take a few pics.
This is Minnie Pearl.

I stopped on the square to visit with her,
I loved this shot with the bird
on the bench with her.

Thought I would ride around the old
town and check out houses.
Love the fence.

These folks also painted the
garage doors, or at least
they applied their humor to it.

Looks like something I would do!

Sometimes you just need to get out of the house. I know they wear aprons in ceramics class. Don't want to get clay on the clothes you have to wear to your other classes.

I rarely wear an apron unless I'm cooking something terribly red or spattery! I can see why you want to get out of the house. I think your "road trip" with your camera was a great idea!

I wish my apron had pockets! It seems so logical; if noticing this right away I wouldn't have made that particular Walmart purchase. But my short, chubby self at least keeps clothes clean and dry. lol We watched "Hee Haw" during my childhood and Minnie Pearl was a treasure. :) Now I'll have to look up clips of her performances.

That recycled tire elephant sculpture is amazing. On that note, I think of you every time I'm driving and see something cool to photograph but it seems there is never a safe place to pull off the side of the road. Oh, well.

Lastly, good on you for getting out. My husband didn't even want to ride along on the forty minute one-way trip to visit out-of-two friends renting cottages at a park. Of course, he's become so introverted (way more than even me!) that I didn't complain.

Be well!
