Granddaddy, Elkins, Voliet, Meek, Legion, Up Coming Trip

 My granddaddy.
He has been gone many, many
years now. But, I still remember
him just like it was yesterday.
This is my mom's dad.
I took this pic with my camera,
I told you all before, I always
had a camera. It was taken in
grandma and granddaddy's living
room on one of our visits to Georgia.

My granddaddy was a man of
very few words but I will never
forget me sleeping on the couch in
the den, next to the kitchen when
we visited. Graddaddy would come in after
work and while he warmed his meal
that granny left in the stove for
him he would sing to me, "Hey,
hey, good looking, what cha got cooking"?

He also called me string bean.
Now, I finished out growing at
5'2, like in the 6th grade and that
is exactly where I stayed. For a 6th grade
girl though, I was considered tall. Oh,
and I was skinny.

6th grade,
which at the time was considered
Elementary school.
Can you find me?

When I went into 7th grade I was
no longer taller than most of the boys.
I hit my height, and everybody
else grew that summer.

Teacher here was Mrs. Elkins.
Sometime before I had her for a teacher,
she was in a bad wreck and she wore
one shoe built up cause it had been
crushed.

This was Mrs. Voliet,
5th grade. She recently passed on
in March of this year.
She was born in 1940 making
her 86 yrs old. Wow, amazing all those
years teaching and she was not driven
to an early grave.

And this one was one of my
favorites, Ms. Meek when I had
her for 3rd grade.

Really strange to see that they
recently passed on cause I felt
like they were so much older

than me when I was in school
with them teaching and somehow
I thought they were gone
long before they were.

Mrs Meek was 83.

For 3rd grade there was
Mrs. Legion. My son also had
Mrs. Legion when he went to
this same school. But many
yrs later, when I worked for the TBI
another employee and I were
at Wally World purchasing items
for a gift basket for someone
from work that had had surgery.
Walking through the store I look
up and see Mrs. Legion. I spoke her
name and she looked at me calling
me out by name.
OH CRAP, was I that bad that
all this time later, she remembered
not just me, but my NAME also?
WOW, what a memory.

Now for those that are not aware of
it, I hated MATH, so bare with me
while I do the math on the
years since I had been in Mrs.
Legions class.
Okay, think I got it, 41 yrs.
Although in the space of that time
Cory, my ADHD bouncing off the wall
child had her as a teacher, 3rd grade also.
 she remembered me for me.
But, when the thought of her
remembering me, the thought
also jumped into my head, is it
ME or was it CORY she was actually
remembering.

Sunday morning, I was talking with Cory
and I mentioned this to him,
of course, his reply was it was probably
him she was remembering and that I
was his mom!
Or, she just had the most amazing
memory!

Why is when you are young, you
are thinking of all you
want to do, places you want
to go and so on, but
when you are older you start
taking out all the memories and
reliving them?
Know what I remember about Mrs. Voliet?
Write offs.
Internet pic

Yep, me, write offs, but unlike
so many teachers that have you write
a sentence like above, Mrs. Voliet had
to stretch it out...
way out.
I will not talk in class during math time while
Mrs. Voliet is up front talking.

I will have you know, this is when
I learned how to hold two pencils in one
hand and write with them.
It's a skill and one I think is long
lost. Do kids still do write offs?

Okay, I have known about this for
days about an upcoming trip I am going
to take. Gotta share..
I am going to the land
of emerald green,
  •

where there
are trees that throw apples,

witches that can toss a ball of fire
at you,

where girls skip down the
yellow brick road...

Yes, I am going to the land of Oz.

  • The 55th annual festival, one of the world’s largest Oz events, featuring:

    • Walk‑through Oz from Gale Kansas Farm to Emerald City

    • Tornado experience

    • Photo ops with Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Cowardly Lion, and Wicked Witch

    • Live performances, arts & crafts, memorabilia, and food vendors Beech Mountain+1.

What to Expect

Visitors follow Dorothy’s journey, meeting characters, experiencing the tornado, and culminating in Emerald City. The park also offers:

  • A hot air balloon ride (if available)

  • Costume shop and props display

  • Seasonal ticket prices (around $60 + fees; advanced booking recommended) Periodic Adventures.

Tips for Visiting

  • Book early for limited tickets, especially for Tea with Dorothy.

  • Arrive early to avoid crowds and secure the best photo spots.

  • Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and rain gear.

  • Dress up for character photos.

  • Allow 2–3 hours for the full experience Periodic Adventures.

I have wanted to go for years,
yet, I just never do it.
My sis in law saw the into on FB
and told me it was time to book.
Next thing I know, my brother has
purchased four tickets with us staying
in the NC cabin they own.
OH MY GOSH...
I AM GOING TO OZ!

LIONS, TIGERS
and BEARS
oh my!

I'm off to see the Wizard, the
wonderful Wizard of OZ.

Better calm down, I have to wait
till the end of Sept. but YAY...

Pam
