Sleep Apnea, CPAP Machine and CPAP Residual

CPAP machine, just like I use.
It adjust itself to give your
body the correct amount of
air that is needed. Used for
people with sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea - A potentially
serious sleep disorder in which
breathing repeatedly stops
and starts.

Residual EDS - typically defined
as daytime sleepiness that impairs
functioning despite CPAP therapy.

I know I have been really open
with my health on here, I do that
mostly to allow folks that might
have issues, new to things that I suffer
can ask me questions.
Anyway, back in
2005 I was having a big
issue with being sleepy during
the day. It got so bad that I
moved like the walking dead.
I knew there was a big issue when
I started dozing at red lights.

I went through 2 sleep studies.
In a seven hour sleep study I
slept, completely for less then 3
hours. I stopped breathing or had
issues with breathing 400 and some
odd times. When I stopped breathing
the longest period was 33 seconds.
Oxygen was not getting to my
brain, causing major migraines.
But little did I know it was
affecting my muscles and nerves,
due to lack of oxygen.

In the beginning I felt AMAZING
once I adjusted to the CPAP
machine. But I never did
kick the sleepy feeling during
the day completely.
As the years went by the sleepy
through the day got worse.
By this time I learned that the
sleep apnea had caused my
Fibro. So, since fatigue goes
hand in hand with Fibro, I just
put it off to that. But over a yr
ago I mentioned it to my sleep
doc. Since my CPAP machine links
up to a program on the internet that
the docs office links up to, it shows
my machine is working well,
no mask leaks etc. But there is an
issue as to why I am still
sleepy...
It is called CPAP Residual or
Residual EDS,  daytime
sleepiness due to using a
CPAP machine. I read up on
this and basically out of all
the folks that are put on a CPAP,
only 10 percent have this issue.
YAY!!
Leave it to me!
I was put on Suniosi,
a newer treatment.
I took it for the first six months and
was so happy to stay awake during the
day that I did not notice a strange
affect. The second six months, I
noticed that I clinched my jaws.
I just put that off to COVID, thinking
maybe the issues and stress of
what he world
was dealing with was affecting
more then I thought.
However, once I forgot to call
the script in to the pharmacy,
considered a controlled substance
and for whatever reason, NO
pharmacy around here keeps it
in so it took five days for it to be
ordered and shipped to them.
During that time I realized
I was not clinching my jaws.
Another time, a the yr mark of
me taking it the insurance
company requested authorization
again from the doc. Causing several
day delays of not having it. I noticed
again, no clinching.
This last six months the clinching
got worse, I started clicking my
teeth, not grinding, but
clicking and also pushing
my tongue at the bottom
of my teeth.

Now, with all that said,
I had an apt with the doc for my
six month appearance. I mentioned
all this to him so I have now
been changed to an older
med, today was my first day
on it. Still the jaw clinching but
it will prob take a day or two
for that to stop.
I had a better day, if seems
to work better on me
but that can change once it is
my system.

We will see!!!
Telling you all that I will
continue...
I have fought to stay off
pain meds for the fibro for
15 yrs now. Each passing yr
it gets worse. There are nights
that I have issues going to sleep
due to pain. That could also be
part of the reason I stay sleepy.
Anyway, I have an apt with my
general doc in Aug. I plan on
talking with her about going to
a pain clinic. At least to have
something here for when I
really, really need it.
I think it is time I
finally admitted that this
is not getting better and
I can't cont to have any
form of life without help.

Keep me in your
thoughts please,
Pam

We're thinking of you and sure hope all will be okay, so do Lily, Misty and Chey, the trio of nurses.

I'm so sorry. Living with pain is not a great way to live. I hope they can help. (When I was younger, I used to feel tired all the time. I did find a solution that worked for me, but I didn't have chronic issues like you do.)

How scary that you would fall asleep at red lights. I hope they can work out everything ad help you manage the pain and all the other issues you have. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

That's pretty disconcerting. And pain -- I can relate, though I suspect not what I experience is not nearly so intense as yours. I hate it when all the issues work against each other.
